Excerpts of remarks by Bill Hart, Chair of the Publications Committee, in ceremony presenting Testimony to the Minnesota Supreme Court. View PDF
That the first major project of the newly formed Minnesota Supreme Court Historical Society is the publication of this volume of memorials to justices is fitting. Perhaps more than in any other branch of government, the legacy of members of the judiciary lives on in their decisions, to which we give great deference particularly as we interpret and shape the common law in Minnesota.
—From the foreword by Chief Justice Russell A. Anderson, Minnesota Supreme Court
These memorials provide a remarkable glimpse into the professional and personal lives of Minnesota’s supreme court justices over the last 150 years. Whether those lives were plain or extraordinary, they are linked to one another and to present and future generations by their contributions to the development of the rule of law, case by case and one human situation after another. We truly stand on their shoulders.
— Former Associate Justice Sam Hanson, Chair, Minnesota Supreme Court Historical Society
This compilation showcases the remarkable lives and striking accomplishments of the men and women who have served on the Minnesota Supreme Court. Browse a few or read them all. Either way you will find yourself thinking, “No wonder Minnesota’s judiciary is regarded as among the best in the country.”
— Publications Committee Co chair William M. Hart, Minnesota Supreme Court Historical Society
The third branch of government is often an enigma to the public. These memorials put a human face to the court, providing a wealth of biographical and institutional history collected nowhere else.
— Minnesota State Law Librarian Barbara L. Golden
