The Minnesota Supreme Court has long had a tradition of commissioning formal portraits of its Chief Justices. However, for some unknown reason, there are four Chief Justices whose portraits cannot be found in the collection.
In order to rectify these omissions, the Minnesota Supreme Court Historical Society has engaged St. Paul‑based artist Merry DeCourcy to paint the portraits of Lafayette Emmett, Charles Loring, John P. Davaney, and Henry M. Gallagher.
Ms. DeCourcy has a national reputation as an artist and is particularly well known for her exquisite portraits.
MSCHS plans to formally present these portraits to the Minnesota Supreme Court in a special ceremony early next year.
