History Day Project Award Winners
MSCHS is pleased and proud to recognize the winners of the history day projects that it sponsored.
Jessica Biedler and John Knapp of the St. Paul Open School presented a program entitled, Rudy Perpich: The People’s Governor. Governor Perpich, of course, played a particularly significant role in the history of the Minnesota Supreme Court by appointing a majority of women to the Court and making it the first state supreme court in America to have such a majority.
Abi Jones and Kendre Pust of Sandburg Middle School presented a program entitled, No Girls Allowed: Peg Breden. This project recounted the struggles of Peg Breden and her legal battle to expand opportunities for women in high school athletics in Minnesota.

Adequate Court Funding
At its January 22, 2009 meeting, the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Supreme Court Historical Society formally adopted a Resolution to urge the Minnesota Legislature to take immediate action to adequately fund the Judicial Branch of our State. View MSCHS Resolution PDF Document.
The commitment of our fine judges and court personnel, and the fairness and effectiveness of our great court system, are second to none and the envy of the rest of the country. However, even with these great people and this great institution, Minnesota’s Judicial Branch has been severely damaged by under funding and relentless budget cuts. As one of the three coequal branches of Minnesota’s constitutional government, and as the institution that is entrusted with ensuring equal protection and fair treatment of Minnesota’s citizens, it is imperative that we maintain the integrity of our court system with sufficient financial support to properly conduct its vital work.
Accordingly, we fully support the Coalition to Preserve the Justice System and the Minnesota State Bar Association’s initiatives to secure adequate funding from the Minnesota Legislature for the judiciary and the justice system of Minnesota.
This Resolution has been transmitted and our position in this regard has been made known to the leadership of both parties of the Minnesota Legislature, Governor Pawlenty, and Chief Justice Magnuson. We stand ready to assist in any efforts that would promote adequate funding by the Minnesota Legislature for our judiciary and the justice system.
The members of the Coalition to Preserve the Justice System are: Minnesota Sheriffs' Association, Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association, WATCH, Minnesota County Attorneys Association, Minnesota Urban County Attorneys Association, Teamsters, AFSCME, Minnesota State Bar Association, League of Women Voters, Minnesota City Attorneys Association, Minnesota State Bar Association Civil Litigation Section, Hennepin County Bar Association, Ramsey County Bar Association, Civil Legal Services, Minnesota Association of Verbatim Reporters and Captioners, Minnesota Judicial Branch, Minnesota District Judges Association, Minnesota Association for Court Management, and Minnesota Board of Public Defense.
